Beware of MRSA!

That’s the word out of the CDC and a recent report in JAMA. Not really news, since MRSA (methicillin-resistant staphylococcus aureus) is known to be problematic in hospitals. What is news, however, is that the resistant strain is also becoming more prevalent in communities, and by recent estimates has outpaced AIDS in terms of annual US death rates. Formidable, though the other side of this is that HIV is practically a chronic condition for many in this country thanks in large part to multi-drug antiviral regimens that keep the disease in check and prolong the lifespan of those diagnosed. Still, MRSA should not be taken lightly.

Is there anything you can do to protect yourself against MRSA? Don’t get admitted to the hospital, for one (by staying healthy – obviously you shouldn’t avoid going to the hospital if you are very sick). Every time nurses/doctors poke and prod you, you’re at risk (catheters, surgeries, etc). If you don’t see your nurse/doctor wash their hands in front of you before performing an exam, ask them if they washed their hands. Most will wash their hands before and after each patient, sometimes out in a hallway or other room where you might not see them, but it doesn’t hurt to ask and make sure – your health is at risk if they don’t, so you have every right to know. Most hospitals and doctor’s offices also have hand-sanitizer pumps all over the place that should be frequently used. Hospitals in Great Britain recently banned the use of neckties in an attempt to control hospital-acquired infections, since ties are rarely washed and thus are known to harbor germs for a long time. If you’re not in the hospital but get a scratch or other wound, you should always wash it carefully to avoid any infection, staph or other.

Hopefully health care works will be more careful in their use of antibiotics – indeed, several drugs are “use-restricted” at hospitals so they may still be used as a last-ditch effort, reserved for only the most drug-resistant bacteria.  But if a bacteria is resistant to those drugs, quite frankly there’s not much that can be done, and people die as a result of overwhelming infection.  Last but not least, if you are taking a prescription antibiotic you should always finish the entire dose as directed, to avoid breeding your own drug-resistant bugs. Only time will tell whether these measures are enough to limit the dangers of MRSA and other resistant bacteria.

Hell is for those who have unforgiveness.
You have been given unconditional love – your daughter deserves the same – especially from her mother!
      Please re-think your comment!
You may find yourself roting in hell and your daughter will have eternal life with God (the creater of life)in heaven – or you may be along side her – depending on your choices.

I was diagnosed with MRSA in my Thoracic Spine after a treatment for hernia disc. I did the pic lines for 18 months, had the thoracotomy to debrief the infected area in 2003. They say they got all the black bone and infected area. But to this day 6 year later, I still get sick easy now, I get rundown easlily, and about every 2-3 weeks my body shut down and all I can do is sleep. Any help with what is going on with my body ever since I got MRSA???? Any help???

I contracted surgical-site MRSA in January 2008. Vancomycin did nothing, nor did Zyvox. Finally, Cubicin allowed me to heal. I was hospitalized off and on for months. I lost the skin on my right side and underwent an additional five surgeries as a result, the last being April 2009. To this day my immune system is compromised. I just had a two week stint of the Swine Flu and still feel exhausted. I don’t know if it is a result of the MRSA itself or the high powered antibiotics. Can anyone point me in the right direction? My cognitive skills have also been affected. I realize chemo may cause that condition, however, I would like to know what the long-term effects of MRSA and the antibiotics used to fight it also affect the neuro-system.

My nephew, (Benny) was treated for MRSA on his knee..with Bacitracin.
    8-1-09.
He is 25 years old and was always very polite and extremely intellegent with an awesome personality and a can do attitude.
He is now at his wits end- he has stopped working and can not stay focused on a task, he can no longer read and absorb the words or even the plot of the story.
He tells us he feels as if he is disconnected from his body, he does not remember moving from one spot to another, he feels as if he is , “on drugs or high” and he is not even having an occasional beer… Let alone partaking of drugs. He has been to the E.R. and had a cat scan —Which was negative – Then a mental institution admitted him when he stated he did not know how to act or what he was going to do with himself– And that he did not even know how to keep going.
This is the same kid that two months ago was working full time and totally comitted to family and friends. Now he has moved home, stopped working and stays close to family members and avoids being alone.

I acquired MRSA in 2003, I have been at wits end for over 7 years. I have found it next to impossible to maintain any long term energy level. My wife will tell everyone how much I have changed is getting MRSA. I was an active police officer, in perfect health and always happy and ready to go on no sleep. Not anymore, But mine was internal thoracic spine, not sure where your husband has it or which drugs he is using to fit it! I’m not sure if it is from operations or the heavy antibiotics or what, but it does seem to change your personal body chemistry. In more cases, you are hearing life changes from people infected with MRSA and most haven’t been for the good. Tell you husband to hang in there it will get easier to handle and work around. Try to be patient, I am sure he is at wits end with himself also…

GET A SECOND OPINION!!! Find a Infectious Disease specialist in your state. My husband got MRSA after an emergency heart cath. He was in the hospital 12 days with a very large hole in his groin that a wound vac. was used. Before leaving the hospital he complained of some pain under his right rib cage. 2 months later he is back in the hospital after having gone through every ct and test you can think of and finally have found MRSA in his T7 and T8 in his back. Don’t give up, keep after someone until you get the answers. I don’t know what the side effects may be for my husband, but at least he is still here to help me raise our young children.

April 2010 I had a ventral hernia repair. I had MRSA infected synthethic mesh placed in me. I was so sick I had to disconinue work in June. My primary Dr. would not listen, and in fact was covering for the hospital and surgeon who had done this to me. I finally sought a second opinion from another hospital and the surgeon suspected the mesh in me was infected. August 2010 I have surgery to remove the infected mesh. It took 6 1/2 hours and I lost my complete umbilical. 5 days later I was back in for my entire incision being infected. Then I was placed on a wound vac, but they put the tape over an open infected area on the outside of my abdomen, thus 48 laters more surgery.
I then had home health care (excellent care), and fought off another 2 infections at home. I was released from Home Health the first week of Dec. Since then I have another infection (my primary care said it was sinuitis), and now in the last 3 weeks I am having yet another infection with blood in my urine. I am now waiting yet another 3 days to see what kind of infection I have now. And this all happened after I had beat lung cancer in July of 09. I can no longer do anything I used to do. I am exhausted after walking 1/2 block.

No attorney will help me, and my son even took pictures of the black mold infested bathroom in hospital room the day after my surgery. I am so weak now, that I don’t even want to go on. I have begun to see a psychologist who insisted I see a different primary care, but I just found out my insurance ended on Feb 4 the same day my job let me go. This has cost me everything. I will begin to lose my home in April. This is my story and I thank you for listening

Please find a naturopathic doctor and get the book “MRSA Secrets Revealed,” written by a microbiologist who studied mrsa and staph infections, etc. My son was extremely ill I quickly realised conventional methods wouldn’t work and the conventional doctors/hospitals for whatever reason are not paying attention. He almost died with sepsis even after all the outward symptoms of blood infection where there — red streaks rapidly going down his leg, absesses, etc. Even infectious disease doc not alot of help. But the stuff I’ve read in this book and started to apply (like garlic, essential oils, supplements to rebuild immune system, etc.) have been a little bit of hope. I emailed the author of this book and she did email me back and say given my son’s history it would be tough to fight it and not get reinfected but not impossible. And she told me to find a natropath so I did. Bacteria is tricky, sly, and clever. It will mutate, hide, and survive just about anything convention medicine has to offer. READ the Book! It’s all there, best information. Not out of the woods yet, going tomorrow to natropathic immune specialist. God Bless You, I will pray for your speedy healing and recovery from this — there are those of us who know exactly what you’re going through. You are not alone.

I didn’t know anyone else was having my problems due to MRSA. You’d think there would be more information available considering Peyton Manning and Tom Brady both had to have additional knee surgeries due to MRSA. Also, the NFL fined Kellon Winslow for complaining about it. In fact, an 18 year old Florida High School Football player died from an infected scratch – it was on Dr. G Medical Examiner. I searched for information regarding the antibiotics – the only thing I could find out is that they cause insomnia. No long-term effects, nothing. I contacted the CDC and the FDA – I never received a response from either of them. You immune systems will be compromised for life – it never goes away and it is never cured.

    If you have staph infection, you can get better if you take some antibiotics to prevent secondary infection. ;

I’m wondering if anyone caught the article in August where the hospital in question knew the patient had a very virlent staph infection and tried to quarentine it. The initial patient died. Even enforcing the quarentine rules (gowning up, gloves, masks, etc.) nine other patients became infected, they all died. It will take ten years to produce an antibiotic that will contain that form of staph infection. TEN YEARS. Yet, I was told by my surgeon that they tested their prof’s lab coat years ago and it was covered. They do not take it seriously and they do not care.

I was bitten by a poisonous spider last Oct then got mrsa in the would. I apent 5 days in the hospital, then took several different combinations of antibiotice until Dec when I stopped because they were starting to effect my gut. The would is healed, but the tendon directly beneath was damaged. This bite was on the side of my wrist right below my thumb. I am so tired all the time and in fact lost my job because I could not keep up. Some days I am so tired by 2 pm I have to lie down. I have fibromyalgia and arthritis and they both seem worse. My good friend has noticed my lack of energy as well. I don’t eat well anymore and generally feel prettt crummy. Isthis the after effect of the mrsa? I keep waiting to bounce back but it just doesnt happen.

Yes, Fibromyalgia is caused by MRSA. The fire, the ache In your hips, the exhaustion are all MRSA-related Fibromyalgia, at least it was for me. It is discouraging that I cannot count on my body any more. I empathize and hope you find the strength to walk or ride a bike. It is difficult, but it does help ease the pain. Take care.

My brother got mrsa from a hip replacement 6 months ago. He was given vanco; he finally was given the ok to have a needed heart valve replacement. He had it and was doing great, but after he returned home an infection appeared in the area where the heart cath was done. It has not been identified as mrsa, but you have to think that! He still does not have a hip replacement. Just someone please tell me he can beat this and finally get his life back.

MRSA- is an evil demon. I have had MRSA twice in 6 years. The first time I was in the hospital for 11 days and 4 weeks ago I was admitted to the hospital again. My stay at the hospital was shorter this time only for 7 days, however I did have a pic line for several weeks. I am off the pic line right now but on very strong oral meds.

The meds have messed with my head a bit, but I can’t comment fully on any long lasting effect to them till I am off the meds all together.

However, I do have a question for everyone: I got MRSA when I went to an emergency care facility to have a hematoma looked at and they lanced it to relieve the blood clots. The hole in my leg was to the bone 2.5 cm wide, and 3.7 long. Although my “hole” is feeling better, I am having massive pain in my knee, shin, ankle and the flank side of my foot.

The pain is very very strange- one min it is extremely painful and then the next I seem to have phantom limb syndrome.

    Any help would be appreciated.
